For children 🦉
Hoot! Here's what Guroo knows about you: your first name and age group (a grown-up told us), and your scores and stars. We use them to show your progress and choose your next trick.
We never show adverts. Nobody can message you in Guroo. If anything worries you, talk to the grown-up who set up Guroo.
Who we are
Sanidh Trading Company Limited, registered in England and Wales (company number 17287046), is the data controller for gurucool.uk and the Guroo app. Registered office: 16 Vane Close, Harrow, HA3 9XD, United Kingdom. Data protection requests: privacy@gurucool.uk. Anything else: hello@gurucool.uk.
What we collect and why
| Grown-up account | Email address and password (stored securely by our database provider; we can't see your password). Optional mobile number, and whether you agreed to WhatsApp progress messages. Why: to run your account and, only if you opt in, send progress updates. |
| Child profile | First name (a nickname is fine) and age group, entered by you. Why: to personalise lessons and reports. We never ask for a child's email, photo, school or location. |
| Learning progress | Which tricks and lessons were played, scores, stars, hints used, points, streaks, badges and levels. Why: to track progress across devices, pick the next trick, and write your progress report. |
| Try-without-signing-up | A trick played before signing up is stored only on your device. If you then create an account, that one result is copied to your child's profile, along with the first name you typed. |
| Usage statistics | A random ID for your browser, which pages and features were used (for example “trick started”, “worksheet link tapped”), device type (phone or computer), the website or campaign that brought you here, and dates and times. Why: to see what helps children learn and which ways of finding Guroo work. You can turn this off below. |
| Invite links | When you share a trick, the link contains a random code linked to your account, so both families can be given a reward when a friend joins. The friend sees no personal details about you or your child. |
| Weekly trick emails | If you ask on our website: your email address, the page you signed up on and how you found us. We are not sending these emails yet; when we start, every email will have an unsubscribe link. |
| Interest in paid packs | Taps on the 80p extra-practice button, so we know whether to offer them. |
| Website hosting | Our host keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses, for security. |
Our lawful bases (UK GDPR)
- Contract: running your account, child profiles and progress. This is the service you asked for.
- Legitimate interests: keeping Guroo secure, usage statistics, invite rewards and interest in paid packs. We have weighed these against your family's interests, keep them minimal, and you can opt out of statistics.
- Consent: weekly trick emails and WhatsApp progress messages. You can withdraw consent at any time.
Children
Guroo is for children aged 5 to 11, set up and managed by a parent or carer aged 18 or over. We follow the ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code: privacy settings are high by default, we collect the minimum needed, there is no advertising, no profiling for marketing, no location tracking and no way for strangers to contact a child. Encouragements in the app (like streaks) are there to support learning, and there is no pressure to buy anything.
Who else handles your data
- Supabase: our database and sign-in provider. Your data is stored in Ireland (EU).
- Netlify: hosts the website and app, and keeps server logs.
- WhatsApp: only if you tap a Share button. We open WhatsApp with a message you can edit before sending; WhatsApp's own privacy policy then applies to that message.
These providers only process data on our instructions. Where they handle data outside the UK, this is under safeguards recognised by UK law. We don't sell or rent data, and we don't use advertising or social media trackers. Fonts and images are served from our own site, so opening Guroo doesn't contact Google or any ad network.
Storage on your device
Guroo doesn't use cookies. It uses your browser's local storage for things the app needs to work (keeping you signed in, the chosen child, settings, and a copy of progress so it loads quickly and works offline), and for usage statistics (a random browser ID and how you first found us). Turning statistics off below stops the second group.
How long we keep data
- Account, child profiles and progress: while your account is open. If an account isn't used for 2 years, we delete it.
- Usage statistics: up to 24 months.
- Weekly-trick email list: until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you.
- Invite codes: they stop working after 30 days, and records are deleted with the account.
- Data on your device: until you clear it or remove the app.
Your rights
You can ask us to: give you a copy of your family's data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, or move it elsewhere. Email privacy@gurucool.uk from your account's email address and we'll reply within one month. To delete your account and your children's data, just email "Please delete my Guroo account".
If you're unhappy with how we handle data, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, 0303 123 1113.
Changes
If we change this notice, we'll update the date at the top. For important changes, we'll email account holders.
